Turning the Key for this Year’s Cruise Pottsville Lions Cruise Committee Plans 2009 Event
POTTSVILLE - 2009 will mark the 16th year of the Great Pottsville Cruise, with a whole new venue. This year’s event will be adding a flea market, crafts and vendor area at Ken’s Tires on Laurel Blvd., across from Martz Hall. Also new this year will be a MEGA-cash drawing of $5,000 to be raffled off, along with five $100 cash prizes. Tickets will be on sale at all Cruise outlets and Cruise events August, 5, 6, 7, 8, and 9.
According to Cruise Chairman Jerry Enders, the 2009 Cruise will be as Denis Gage noted last year, “a must see and do” car event. Gage, host of TV’s “My Classic Car” filmed last year’s Cruise for an episode of the show which will air July 12, 2009. Also appearing at the 2008 Cruise was celebrity guest Genevieve Chappell, Hot Rod Magazine’s “Queen of Cars.”
For more information on this year’s Great Pottsville Cruise, phone 570-622-9510, 570-628-4561, or see www.thegreatpottsvillecruise.com. Once again, the official sponsor will be Pioneer Pole Buildings, Inc. of Schuylkill Haven. The Great Pottsville Cruise is a Pottsville Lions Club and Pottsville Pride event, benefiting Pottsville Lions Charities

Dennis Gage To Film 15th
Annual Great Pottsville Cruise

Dennis Gage, TV’s top car guy and host of SPEED channel show “My Classic Car” will be filming the 15th Annual Great Pottsville Cruise events for an episode of the show. Gage has been at the helm of “My Classic Car” since 1996, and in addition to his travels for filming purposes, Gage appears at premiere auto shows worldwide.
Gage’s appearance at the Great Pottsville Cruise has been in the works since the 10th annual Cruise in 2003, according to Cruise chairman Jerry Enders. Schedule conflicts, primarily with Reno, Nevada’s “Hot August Nights” prevented Gage from attending. Each year, Gage promised to schedule the Cruise “at the first opportunity” and this year everything went together. On Friday, May 30th, Gage called Enders with the good news, saying “It will make a great show” referring to his filming the Pottsville Cruise.
In addition to filming the Cruise on Sunday, Gage and his camera man will be at Jerry’s Classic Cars & Collectibles Museum on Saturday afternoon, August 9th, and downtown Pottsville Saturday evening for Coney Island Cruise-In Night from 6 to 9 p.m., hosted by the Schuylkill Valley Corvette Club.
Staging for Sunday’s Great Pottsville Cruise will begin at 8 a.m. this year. This is earlier than previous years to accommodate Gage’s filming. For this year, 1972 and older model year vehicles will stage in the west “upper” lot at Martz Hall, and vehicles 1973 and newer will stage in the east “lower” lot. Overflow parking will be at the United Metal Receptacle lot on Laurel Blvd.
Registration for the Great Pottsville Cruise will kickoff on June 18th. Locations for Cruise permits in Pottsville are Jerry’s Northeast Auto Sales, Route 61; 12-Volt Dave’s Audio, W. Market St.; Hadesty Ace Hardware, W. Market St.; Coney Island, Yorkville; and Coney Island, N. Centre St. Other locations include Bruce’s Auto Mall, Schuylkill Haven, and Naftzinger’s Used Auto Parts, Auburn.
This year’s Cruise events are August 6th to 10th. See www.TheGreatPottsvilleCruise.com or call Jerry Enders 570-622-9510 or Dave Clews 570-628-4561 for more information on events or this year’s official Cruise Car, a 1995 Corvette sponsored by Pioneer Pole Buildings, Inc. of Schuylkill Haven. The winning ticket for the Cruise Car will be drawn at 8:45 p.m. August 10th. The Great Pottsville Cruise is a Pottsville Lions Club and Pottsville Pride event.

There will be live music by “The Mudflaps”, trophies and prizes for the best 50’s attire, dance contests, and much more. Bring your ride; parking lot security will be provided.
Saturday, August 9th kicks off with the annual Cruise-In to Jerry’s Classic Cars & Collectibles Museum, 394 S. Centre St. Pottsville. A great day is planned with a live appearance by Genevieve Chappell from ESPN2, live radio, a DJ, and special Museum tours throughout the day from 10 am to 5 pm. Saturday night it’s the Cruise-In to the downtown Coney Island on North Centre St Pottsville from 6 pm to 9 pm with the band “Shake, Rattle, & Soul” sponsored by the Schuylkill Valley Corvette Club. Last year’s event drew over 200 classic cars, street rods, and Corvettes. TV personality Genevieve Chappell, host of ESPN2’s “Bidding Wars” and “Garage Block” will appear for photos and autographs.
Sunday, August 10th kicks off the 15th Annual Great Pottsville Cruise with 12-Volt Dave’s “Cruisin’ Thunder” starting at 8 am at Ken’s Tires, Laurel Blvd. Pottsville. Special features throughout the day will include Kevin Harvicks #29 Pennzoil Shell NASCAR and the Bridgestone/Firestone Formula F-1 Indy car, sponsored by Ken’s Tires.
Stage your cruise car early at Martz Hall for a full day of fun and special appearances. Spectator parking will be available at United Metal Receptacle. The car show will be from 10 am to 4 pm. Cruise the city from 4 pm to 6 pm, and then it’s back to Martz Hall from 6 pm to 9 pm for trophy presentations, live music from “Flamin’ Dick & the Hot Rods”, and drawings for the Cruise Car and for the “Tonight Show with Jay Leno” tickets. The evening will conclude with a fireworks display sponsored by the Yuengling Brewery & Gift Shop, Schuylkill County Visitors Bureau, Ed’s USA Auto Rentals, and United Metal Receptacle.
For additional information, call 570-622-9510 or 570-628-4561, or see www.TheGreatPottsvilleCruise.com provided by DSSCO.net. The Great Pottsville Cruise is a Pottsville Lions Club and Pottsville Pride event.
Cruise Chronology
Cruise Night
Chronology
1st year (1994) - The Pottsville Cruise started in 1994 and was originated by the Pottsville Pride and a four man committee consisting of Bill Moran, Bill Kline, Roy Eiler and Jerry Enders. The cruise was expected to have about 90 participating cars, trucks, and to everyone surprise 360 vehicles came to participate. The initial cruise was on a Wednesday evening.
2nd year (1995) - Over 1200 cruisers showed up and about 5000 spectators were there to enjoy the day along with many porch and yard parties throughout the cruise route. Mike O’Toole (FOP) joined committee second year. The second Cruise was again held on a Wednesday night. And guess what!...There were Elvis sightings.
3rd year (1996) - Over 1600 cruisers participated and with such a large response from the public, trophies and awards were given for the best non-alcoholic porch and yard parties. This was the last of the Wednesday night cruises.
4th year (1997) - The cruise route was expanded to MarLin and over 2200 cruisers participated with everything from street rods, muscle cars, custom pick-ups, Corvettes and much more. There was even antique cars from the early 1900’s, fire trucks and the most unusual vehicle was the WWII army tank.
This was also the initial year for the antique car parade. The antique parade proved to be a crowd pleaser and will be continued prior to future cruises.
Also, due to the tremendous continued growth a Wednesday Cruise was no longer feasible. This Fourth Cruise marked the first year cruise was moved to a Sunday to accommodate the large number of participants and spectators. Over 50 trophies and awards given out during the Fourth Annual Cruise.
5th year (1998) - The Cruise broke all records with over 10,000 spectators and over 2500 vehicles cruising the streets of Pottsville.
More vendors and more entertainment added to the fun and excitement of the day with old fashion rock n’ roll bands and DJ’s playing throughout the city. It seemed to bring everyone together for a fun filled day.
Over 80 trophies and awards were given out prior to the drawing for the lucky winner of the Official Cruise car, a 1952 Hot Rod Lincoln, along with fireworks as the grand finale.
6th year (1999) - This is the year that the Pottsville Cruise had surpassed all others as the area’s largest fund raiser. Chances on the Cruise Car, a 1975 Corvette Stingray, raised over $100,000 for over 90 local organizations and charities.
Highlights of 1999’s cruise included more trophies and awards. There were awards for best decorated porches and 50’s house parties along the cruise route. There were also be special awards and gifts given out throughout the day by the cruise committee and judges.
There was DJ’s and entertainment at staging areas, along with vendors and refreshments. Cruise T-shirts, and special collection glasses were on sale throughout the day.
For the first time ever, the Pottsville Cruise was viewed “as it happened” on the internet! What was once done by several individuals became a daunting task as the number of participants and spectators broke the 10,000 mark. Those few originators thought it best to join forces with a large service club... the Pottsville Lions.
The Lions of Pottsville took on the exciting task and was able to present other non-profit organizations and clubs with the opportunity to raise some money through the sale of chances on the Cruise Car.
